The 10th edition of the Czech International Air Fest (CIAF 2003) was exceptionally not held at the military airfield of Hradec-Kralove but at the civil airport Brno. There have been a lot of rumors and different reasons have been mentioned for this action, but I will not continue to speculate about it. The fact that no Czech MiG-21 neither opened the flight display as previously had been announced nor one could be seen in the static display speaks for itself as well as for the condition and the problems of the airforces of the former Warsaw Pact.
Another big announcement in the programm have been the the four Su-27 of the Russian Knights, which also did not appear due to the same reason why Suchoi does not send its aircraft to Paris or Farnborough… You might think now ‘well, he must really have been dissapointed there after an 6hrs drive’, but I haven’t as I always enjoy the (airshow) atmosphere in the Czech Republic and there have also been many many highlights.
The great surprise has been the Canadian Tiger Hornet of the 410sqn. ‘Cougars’ that crossed only for this show the Atlantic together with a two seater wearing ‘ Centennial of flight / Centenaire de l’aviation’ markings on the tail . I have been really puzzled when I saw these birds, but when I asked a crew member about the Tiger, he told me: ‘we have been invited to this show and for the flight display, and if we are invited we are bringing our baby!’. 10 out of 10 points for the Canadian Air Force. Let’s all hope that they will do that more often in the future!!
A strong participation came also from the US. In the static have been 2xF-16Cs,2xF-15Es, 2xA-10s accompanied by a KC-135. From the UK was a Harrier and a Hawk on the ground, another Hawk that spotted a special ‘100 years of flight’-sticker took part in the flight display as did the Jaguar solo demo. Mirages could be seen as well, 2 Cs and one D, 3-IA, with 4 bomb drop markings. Of course no show is complete with F-16, this time they came from Holland and Belgium (both flying). To come to an and I am still mentioning the German AF and Navy. They arrived with a lot of special colours: the F-4F 37+96 ‘Wild Horse’ from Hopsten, the ‘Blue Lightning’-Tornado 44+31 of JaboG31 Boelcke and the two Navy Tornados 45+30 and 46+20.
Something’s missing…?! Yes, of course! All the MiGs and Suchois you have expected to see in the Czech Republic, but, what the heck, when you sit down in the evening with a good cold beer and think about the Canadian Tiger, the excellent photo possibilites you don’t care anymore… And already start to think where you might see some next year 😉
Other interesting participants came from the Balkan, with a Super Galeb in the flight display, an Soko J-22 Orao and a An-24 in the static display. Furthermore there has been the L-159 ALCA in the air and an Albatross and a L-159 on the ground. The only participant from the Czech AF in the air was an Mil Mi-24, another helicopter of the same type was sent by the Hungarian Air Force was sent as well for the flight display and finished with the release of some nice flares! From Poland came the Iskra Team and filled the blue czech sky with the polish red and white.
As usual the static display constisted out of an excellent mix of old and new jets from the East and the West, with a lot of nice photos to be taken either in the early morning or late evening when the crowds were not present and in a nice and low light. Before going to the pub for the well-earned beer after a hard day at the show…
La decima edizione del Czech International Air Fest (CIAF 2003) si è svolta eccezionalmente non presso l’aeroporto militare di Hradec-Kralove ma presso l’aeroporto civile di Brno. Molte voci e diverse ragioni sono state menzionate per questa azione, ma non continuerò a speculare al riguardo. Il fatto che nessun MiG-21 ceco non abbia aperto il display di volo come precedentemente era stato annunciato né lo si potesse vedere nel display statico parla da sé, riguardo anche le condizioni e i problemi delle forze aeree dell’ex Patto di Varsavia.
Un altro grande annuncio nel programma sono stati i quattro Su-27 dei Russian Knights, che non sono apparsi per lo stesso motivo per cui Suchoi non abbia inviato i suoi aerei a Parigi o Farnborough… Ora potresti pensare “beh, dev’essere davvero rimasto deluso dopo un viaggio di 6 ore ‘, ma così non è stato perchè mi piace l’atmosfera (degli airshow) nella Repubblica Ceca e ooi ci sono stati molti momenti salienti.
La grande sorpresa è stata il canadese Tiger Hornet del 410sqn. “Cougars” che ha attraversato l’Atlantico solo per questo spettacolo insieme a un biposto la livrea del “Centennial of flight / Centenaire de l’aviation” sulla coda. Sono rimasto davvero perplesso quando ho visto questi uccelli, ma quando ho chiesto a un membro dell’equipaggio della Tiger, mi ha detto: “Siamo stati invitati a questo spettacolo e per il display in volo, e se siamo invitati porteremo il nostro bambino!’. 10 punti su 10 per l’aeronautica canadese.
Speriamo che tutti lo facciano più spesso in futuro!!
Una forte partecipazione è arrivata anche dagli Stati Uniti. Nello statico ci sono stati 2xF-16C, 2xF-15E, 2xA-10 accompagnati da un KC-135. Dal Regno Unito c’era un Harrier e un Hawk a terra; un altro Hawk che mostrava uno speciale adesivo “100 anni di volo” ha preso parte allo spettacolo di volo così come la demo solista della Jaguar. Erano presenti anche dei Mirage, 2 C e un D, 3-IA, con 4 segni di caduta delle bombe. Ovviamente nessun airshow è completo senza gli F-16, questa volta arrivati dall’Olanda e dal Belgio (entrambi volanti). Per finire si può citare l’aAeronautica e la Marina tedesche. Sono arrivati con tantissimi “special colour”: l’F-4F 37+96 ‘Wild Horse’ da Hopsten, il ‘Blue Lightning’-Tornado 44+31 di JaboG31 Boelcke e i due Tornado 45+30 e 46+20 della Marina.
Manca qualcosa … ?! Sì, naturalmente! Tutti i MiG e Suchoi che ti aspettavi di vedere nella Repubblica Ceca! Ma che diamine: quando ti siedi la sera con una buona birra fresca e pensi al Tiger canadese, le ottime possibilità fotografiche non ti interessano più. .. E già inizio a pensare dove lo potresti vedere un po’ l’anno prossimo 😉
Altri partecipanti interessanti sono arrivati dai Balcani, con un Super Galeb in mostra di volo, un Soko J-22 Orao e un An-24 in mostra statica. Inoltre c’è stato l’L-159 ALCA in aria e un Albatross e un L-159 a terra. L’unico partecipante dell’Aeronautica ceca in volo era un Mi-24; un altro elicottero dello stesso tipo è stato inviato dall’aeronautica ungherese anche per il display di volo, finito con il rilascio di alcuni bei razzi illuminanti! Dalla Polonia è arrivata l’Iskra Team che ha riempito il cielo azzurro della Repubblica Ceca con il bianco e il rosso polacchi.
Come al solito la mostra statica era costituita da un eccellente mix di vecchi e nuovi jet da est e ovest, con molte belle foto da scattare sia la mattina presto che la sera tardi quando la folla non era presente e in un bel e poca luce. Prima di andare al pub per la meritata birra dopo una dura giornata allo spettacolo…
