Le Frecce Tricolori in Medio Oriente: nessun contrordine

RIVOLTO Mentre si attende di conoscere gli sviluppi dell’impegno italiano nella guerra in Afghanistan, la Pattuglia acrobatica nazionale scalda i motori in vista del prossimo impegno che la porterà in Medio Oriente.
Contrariamente a quanto ipotizzavano nell’ambiente militare alcune voci nei giorni scorsi, gli Aermacchi MB339 delle Frecce Tricolori saranno reglarmente impegnati dal 7 al 13 novembre prima a Dubai, negli Emirati Arabi Uniti, per il «Dubai Air Show 2001»; poi a Damasco, in Siria, per l’Inter-national Air Show; infine nell’Oman.
«Al momento – ha detto il capo di Stato Maggiore dell’Aeronautica, Sandro Ferracuti – non ci sono contrordini in merito a questa nostra missione. Non sembra, infatti, esserci degli elementi tali da ostacolare o impedire l’esibizione della Pan».

It would be easy to say that the Frecce Tricolori team tend to have their heads in the clouds more than their feet firmly planted on the ground.
Just 24 hours after touching down in Dubai, the team of 10 dare devil pilots – known in English as the three coloured arrows – took off to show the stunned crowds at Dubai 2001 just how good the Italians are at flying.
In their Aermacchi MB339 aircraft, the team reached speeds of up to 600 kilometre an hour.
And the crowd was captivated when the team pulled its two famous moves – one where a pilot falls from the sky like a leaf falling from a tree, and the bomb drop – which is where the pilots fall from the sky and fly outwards.
It is the team’s third visit to Dubai. Every year, the Italians participate at 48 shows around the world, mostly in Europe and the U.S., explained Andrea Saia, the public relations officer.
And when they are not travelling, they are busy practicing their skills at a site near Venice.
While many young hopefuls dream of getting into the largest formation team in the world, not many do, explained Saia.
The requirements are pretty tough – not only do you have to be a captain with the Italian Airforce but you also need to have a friendly disposition.
“We need someone who is a good pilot – a professional – and also a good man, someone who is friendly,” said Saia. “In our team we have almost 90 people and there are 13 pilots.”
Usually 15 budding pilots try to get into the team, but only two make it. Training starts in September and by May, the newcomers are ready to spread their wings with the team – but only in the easiest position.
Within two to three years, they are then able to move up to more difficult levels and generally leave after four to five years. “If you are the leader you stay for a maximum of 10 years.”
Practice and attention to detail is important in this line of work. The team was last struck with sadness 12 years ago when three of its pilots died in an accident in Germany.
“After the accident the safety rules of the Italian aerobatics team was reviewed and it became stricter.”
According to the organisers, Fairs and Exhibitions, more than 14,500 industry visitors have attended Dubai 2001.
It also received 150 official delegations from 52 countries, including representatives from the Bahraini, Omani and Saudi Arabian Armed Forces.
“I came to view the latest aviation technology and was impressed by both the products and services on display,” said Mohammed Saeed of Oman Armed Forces.
A regular visitor to Dubai air shows, Saad Abdul Rahman of the Bahraini Air Force said he found Dubai 2001’s delegations programme more focussed than previously.
“This time we had ample opportunity to talk to various exhibitors, to assess information on products. The quality of exhibitors was extremely high.”
Hamoud Al Omary of Saudi Arabian Armed Forces said the show has proved itself to be the official industry platform for the Middle East.
“It gives us the opportunity to network with industry players from around the world. I have visited air shows in Paris, the UK and Singapore but there is no doubt that Dubai is the one which best serves our regional needs.”
And yesterday, just like all the other days, everyone at the airshow – and several thousands more onlookers thronging the perimeters of the complex – trained their eyes upwards around 2.30 pm, when some of the world’s finest aircraft took the sky.
From chalets to carparks, staircases to skyscrapers, the flying displays have left most of Dubai in awe.
During this time, when most people are eager to look at what is going on above, Dubai Police have also done a commendable job in managing to keep traffic flowing on roads around the airport area, and stop cars from double parking in busy car park areas.

Appena 24 ore dopo essere atterrato a Dubai, il team di 10 piloti – conosciuti in inglese come le “tre frecce colorate” – è decollato per mostrare alla folla sbalordita a Dubai 2001 quanto siano bravi a volare gli italiani.
Nel loro aereo Aermacchi MB339, il team ha raggiunto velocità fino a 600 chilometri all’ora.
E la folla è rimasta affascinata quando la squadra ha eseguito le sue due famose mosse: una in cui un pilota cade dal cielo come una foglia che cade da un albero e la caduta della bomba che è dove i piloti cadono dal cielo e volano verso l’esterno.
È la terza visita della squadra a Dubai. Ogni anno gli italiani partecipano a 48 fiere in giro per il mondo, soprattutto in Europa e negli Stati Uniti, ha spiegato Andrea Saia, addetto alle pubbliche relazioni.
E quando non sono in viaggio, sono impegnati ad esercitarsi in una base vicino a Venezia.
Mentre molti giovani aspiranti sognano di entrare nella formazione più grande del mondo, non molti ci riescono, ha spiegato Saia.
I requisiti sono piuttosto severi: non solo devi essere un capitano dell’Aeronautica Militare italiana, ma devi anche avere un carattere amichevole.
“Abbiamo bisogno di qualcuno che sia un buon pilota – un professionista – e anche un brav’uomo, qualcuno che sia amichevole”, ha detto Saia. “Nel nostro team abbiamo quasi 90 persone e ci sono 13 piloti”.
Di solito 15 piloti in erba cercano di entrare nella squadra, ma solo due ce la fanno. Gli allenamenti iniziano a settembre e da maggio i nuovi arrivati sono pronti a spiegare le ali con la squadra, ma solo nella posizione più facile.
Entro due o tre anni, sono quindi in grado di passare a livelli più difficili e generalmente lasciano dopo quattro o cinque anni. “Se diventi Comandante, rimani per un massimo di 10 anni.”
La pratica e l’attenzione ai dettagli sono importanti in questa linea di lavoro. La squadra è stata colpita da tristezza per l’ultima volta 12 anni fa, quando tre dei suoi piloti sono morti in un incidente in Germania.
“Dopo l’incidente le regole di sicurezza della pattuglia acrobatica italiana sono state riviste e sono diventate più severe”.
Secondo gli organizzatori, Fiere ed Esposizioni, oltre 14.500 visitatori del settore hanno partecipato a Dubai 2001.
Ha inoltre ricevuto 150 delegazioni ufficiali provenienti da 52 paesi, inclusi rappresentanti delle forze armate del Bahrein, dell’Oman e dell’Arabia Saudita.
“Sono venuto a vedere l’ultima tecnologia aeronautica e sono rimasto colpito sia dai prodotti che dai servizi in mostra”, ha affermato Mohammed Saeed delle forze armate dell’Oman.
Saad Abdul Rahman dell’aeronautica militare del Bahrain, un assiduo frequentatore degli spettacoli aerei di Dubai, ha affermato di aver trovato il programma delle delegazioni di Dubai 2001 più mirato rispetto a prima.
“Questa volta abbiamo avuto ampia opportunità di parlare con vari espositori, per valutare informazioni sui prodotti. La qualità degli espositori era estremamente alta”.
Hamoud Al Omary delle forze armate saudite ha affermato che lo spettacolo si è dimostrato la piattaforma ufficiale del settore per il Medio Oriente.
“Ci dà l’opportunità di fare rete con attori del settore di tutto il mondo. Ho visitato spettacoli aerei a Parigi, nel Regno Unito e a Singapore, ma non c’è dubbio che Dubai sia quella che meglio soddisfa le nostre esigenze locali”.
E ieri, come tutti gli altri giorni, tutti all’airshow – e diverse migliaia di spettatori che affollavano i perimetri del complesso – hanno puntato gli occhi verso l’alto intorno alle 14.30, quando alcuni degli aerei più belli del mondo hanno preso il volo.
Dagli chalet ai parcheggi, dalle scale ai grattacieli, le esibizioni hanno lasciato a bocca aperta gran parte di Dubai.
Mentre la maggior parte delle persone era ansiosa di guardare cosa sta succedendo sopra, la polizia di Dubai ha svolto un lavoro encomiabile riuscendo a mantenere il traffico scorrevole sulle strade intorno all’area dell’aeroporto e fermare le auto dal doppio parcheggio nelle aree di parcheggio trafficate .
